These days, many tradie utes are doubling as weekend warriors. Sure, some might explore the odd bush track, go camping, fishing, or haul a boat — but always with style, and preferably without getting bogged. What they all agree on, though, is that their ute has to look the part.

The Open Country M/T is built for serious off-roaders, and was developed from Toyo’s off-road race program, which is immediately evident in its ultra heavy-duty 3-ply carcass and high-ply turn-up construction.

You can’t bluff your way through it. You’ve got to rack up the kilometres, test them in the real world, and compare them side by side to know what truly makes a tyre “tough.”

Ask any question on a 4WD forum and chances are it’ll be this: “What pressure should I run my tyres at?”

You start your day on bitumen, running what I call a baseline pressure. That number might come from the vehicle’s placard or someone who knows what they’re talking about, like my go-to tyre whisperer, Steve Burke from Toyo Tires Australia.

The safety trifecta of ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), TRC (Traction Control) and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) all exist because we’ve come to understand a fundamental truth: a wheel that’s spinning or skidding has lost grip.
