While the GWS GIANTS’ hopes of backing up a finals finish in 2019 looked bright following a 32-point win over Geelong in their first match for the year, the COVID-19 crisis has seen the 2020 AFL season suspended indefinitely.
“It was the right decision to start the season, and clearly it is now the right decision to stop,” commented AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan. “That is why we have acted immediately to take this step to play our role in the community and to protect the long-term future of our game.”
“This is first and foremost a community-wide issue that is impacting everyone, not just the AFL,” adds GIANTS CEO David Matthews in support of the AFL’s decision. “We’re clearly hopeful the season can get back under way at a later date but in the meantime we will continue to work closely with the AFL, as we’ve done in recent weeks, to ensure we find a way through this. Ultimately we will not do anything to compromise the health and well-being of our players and staff.”
