In the bush, no one can hear you cry.

Heading off on an adventure with a freshly serviced vehicle? check the tension on the wheel nuts! Mechanics use air ratchets to secure your wheels, which can tighten wheel nuts beyond the ability of the muscle required to loosen them. If you find yourself needing to swap wheels, overly tight nuts can lead to a litany of trouble, including shearing wheel studs clean off the hub.

If the tools match the fittings you’re halfway there. Make sure the socket is sitting snug and square and apply the necessary force whilst the brace is sitting near-horizontal. Pulling it over-centre from vertical will likely give you a nice back injury. Standing on the very end of the brace and gently springing your body weight up and down often does wonders to loosen stubborn nuts, otherwise a firm downward force by hand should suffice.

It’s also possible that after having bought some flash new wheels for your 4WD, the wheel-brace that came with the vehicle has a socket incompatible with your new nuts.

Ouch! That one will smart if you’re way out of town. At least no-one can hear your cry!
