The Australian Safari is an off-road motor sport event, which in 2008 took place from the 23rd to the 30th August. In this event, competitors traverse over 5,500kms in the Australian outback. This event is known as one of the worlds harshest and challenging off-road races.
The Australian Safari is also referred to as the Southern Hemisphere’s "Paris to Dakar Rally" This year the Australian Safari included approximately 100 competitors, including bikes, quads and cars. Competitors came from all parts of the world, including England, Japan, Scotland, Sweden and of course Australia.
An Australian competitor, Dave Fong was competing for the first time in this event, and finished 12th outright. Competitors who had competed in previous Australian Safaris commented that the conditions in the 2008 event were the harshest ever.
