Nulon Nationals is a series that brings Australia’s car clubs together to battle each other in multiple motorsport disciplines, testing steering skills while pushing the boundaries of cars that are too often built for just one type of racing.

With many competitors running Toyo Proxes R888s and R1Rs, Toyo’s technical team was there to offer tyre management and support to all at Nulon Nationals Round Three.

Run as a Time Attack event at Wakefield Park in NSW, the 65-car field ranged from home brew racers and street cars to open-wheelers and a GT production car.

Benny Tran from the Honda Owners club took out 1st place

Driving on Toyo Proxes R888s, Benny Tran from the Honda Owners club took out 1st place with a blistering 1:01.7, a consecutive win following his record-breaking Bulahdelah Hill Climb victory.

The BYP Integra makes over 350 kilowatts at the front wheels. One of Australia’s fastest front-wheel drive cars, the race-spec DC2 was dominant against a field of AWD cars at an advantage in the cold and greasy conditions which put most of the field two seconds off their usual times.

Adam Burgess from the Ford Owners Club brought out a GT Production car. The Ginetta G50 was manufactured in Europe and imported to compete in GT endurance events in Australia. Normally on full slicks, Nationals regulations meant semi-slicks were required.

Toyo Tires technical manager Steve Burke was on hand to provide technical support to all drivers in the cold and difficult conditions.

“Toyo’s competition tyres meet the needs of club level racers perfectly. This isn’t all out, unlimited budget racing – longevity and consistency count as much as fast times,” Burke said.

“The R888s give racers a much bigger window of performance and will last for multiple race meets. It is really a clubman’s tyre,” he said.

Toyo checking pressures

Toyo also carried out testing on the new R888R, utilising Glen Thomas’ supercharged NB MX-5 that was running on the day.

“The R888Rs showed some very promising results, we are looking forward to further testing on that tyre to see exactly where it fits with our customers.”
