Mackin 86 challenges Pike Peak with Toyo Proxes.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is etched into the pages of motorsport history. The Mountain attracts drivers from all over the world, careening up the mountain face into the clouds. It is a race that has made, and broken, many careers.
Originally debuting at SEMA in 2013, the Mackin FR-S is modified for time-attack.
It is a purpose-built machine, with every aspect of its performance revised. As evident from the lengthy spec sheet at the bottom of the post, the Mackin Industries FR-S is battle-ready.
The FR-S races on a combination of Toyo Proxes tyres, with variable packages to suit the terrain and conditions on the steep climb to the podium, favouring the Proxes R888 for shifting dry, wet and icy conditions.
2015 is the event’s 93rd running and, as ever, Pikes Peak is no joke.
The dangers of motorsport are magnified by the mountain’s constantly fluctuating conditions. Clear and sunny skies at the start line change to sleeting rain and standing water mid-way through the course. Snow and ice lurk through the top section as competitors twist their way to the peak, 14,100 feet above sea level.
The Mackin FR-S has multiple podiums from 2014’s participation in FR street class events. Three-time Pikes Peak veteran Robert Walker will pilot the race-modified FR-S, facing a course that pushes driver and car to the absolute limit of control and ability.
Over the 19km race competitors increase in altitude by 5000 feet, horsepower waning and aero growing ineffective as the oxygen thins.
A balanced, thoroughly engineered package, the Mackin FR-S is a knife that has been sharpened to cut through the 156 corners that make up the course. It has been designed to combat the challenges specific to Pikes Peak. Competing in the Time Attack One group against M3s, 911s and all manner of bespoke race exotica, Walker will push hard.
With a week of practice nearly complete, Race day – Sunday 28th June – looms.
