OPEN COUNTRY R/T ALL-TERRAIN: THE ULTIMATE LIFESTYLE 4X4 TYRE?

Anthony Walsh’s Pro Surfing career has taken him all over the world, fostering an insatiable desire to travel and explore. It only makes sense that he can’t sit still when he’s back home in Australia, so he bundles the family into the Toyota Troop Carrier and explores the vast West Australian coast line in search of the best break, an undiscovered fishing spot or the family’s next adventure.

“I had an old 76 Series that I was forever working on. I love the power and the torque of them and I ended up learning from a good mate of mine who’s a Diesel Mechanic about how to keep an old car running which is handy if you get stuck while you’re touring remotely, but when it came to traveling with the family I knew I needed something newer and more reliable,” explains Anthony of how his latest Troopy build came to be.

As well as plenty of space for the family’s boards, Anthony’s newfound passions for diving and fishing meant that the Troopy would likely be carrying a little weight to help the crew stay off-grid, and would likely have a boat or jetski in tow as well.

“Most weekends we’ll head out somewhere remote and go camping around the coast. We needed a set up that could handle almost any terrain, and then handle the highway kilometers in between,” he continues.

“I’d always seen the Toyo Tyres brand around and seen them on plenty of vehicles. I’d heard plenty of good things, which is what motivated me to give them a go on this build,” continues Anthony.

For Anthony’s Troopy, we suggested the Open Country R/T all-terrain - a relatively new addition to the Open Country range that blends the aggressive look of the Open Country R/T with the perfect balance of on and off-road manners offered by the Open Country A/T III all-terrain.

Importantly, its 2-ply construction utilises the latest technology, meaning that a significant weight saving and improved on-road dynamics don’t come at the expense of off-road capability.

“I’ve always instinctively gone for 3-ply tyres, I didn’t even know that 2-ply was an option!” chuckles Anthony, “but the weight saving definitely translates to better fuel economy when we’re doing highway driving.”

And while the car has only been finished for a little over a month, Anthony and the family have wasted no time putting it through its paces!

“We’ve already done corrugations and some beach driving, and climbed some rocky coastlines. They have no trouble airing down which obviously helps a lot, but our initial impression is that they’re wearing really nicely and handling our style of touring perfectly.”

We’ll share more of Anthony’s adventures with his Open Country tyres and his Troopy on the Toyo Tyres social channels, and continue to publish his experiences with the Open Country R/T all-terrain.
