David Wilson, director and lead instructor at Adventure 4WD has been a 4WD trainer since a time before the internet. He lives and breathes life off the beaten track and is passionate about sharing his knowledge. We want to help Dave spread the word, so every Wednesday; Toyo Tires will be sharing one of his snack sized 4WD tyre tips.
120 is a number to remember.
120 is a load rating index rating that tells me that a tyre will carry 1,400 kilograms. That’s great peace-of-mind when I’m looking to buy some serious 4WD tyres for my truck. That number is a reliable barometer of tyre strength.
When you consider that 112 (1,120kgs) is the most common load index seen on new 4WDs, an improvement of 25 per cent or more has got to be a good thing.
Check out this guide to load and speed ratings to get the whole picture.
Toyo’s Open Country range of light truck all-terrain and mud-terrain tyres offer 120 and higher load indices for the medium to large 4WD vehicles, that you’re likely driving right now. Check the sidewall numbers on your tyres and see if they measure up.
If not, you’ll likely be lacking tyre strength and a failure might be around the next corner.
