Those old splitties are dinosaur material, a five-piece assembly that’s heavy as hell and does nothing for unsprung mass.

Unsprung what? The weight of a wheel assembly is a mass that has to be controlled by the suspension. The bumpier the track the harder the job for the suspension to control especially if the wheel’s heavy. An alloy wheel fitted in the tubeless fashion is a two-piece affair weighing significantly less than the splittie equivalent. It’ll spend more time on the ground doing what it’s supposed to do (grip and steer) because the suspension will be less tired. As for punctures, you won’t need to do repairs in the field anymore if you’re running Toyo Open Country A/TIIs, practising the pressure reduction methods mentioned in these tips, reducing your speed on the bumpier bits and paying attention to the road and its perils!
